Sept 30 - "Cheers" turns 28 years old!

Yes, sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name. And everyone knew your name at Cheers.

The comedy series that ran for 11 years, became a huge success during the late 80's and early 90's. The show's finale, which aired in 1993, was viewed by over 42 million people, making it one of the highest rated programs in United States television history.

The show's star, Ted Danson, played the iconic role of Sam Malone, the bartender and owner of Cheers. Danson would go on to win two Emmy Awards for Best Actor for his role as Sam Malone. Kelsey Grammer, who played the role of Fraiser Crane, received his own spin off show after the Cheers series finished in 1993. The show Frasier would go on to be a huge success in the late 1990's and early part of the 2000's.

Today, Cheers is in syndication and is still widley popular amongst several demographics.

Sept 29 - Happy Birthday Kevin Durant!

Today is the 22nd birthday for NBA Basketball superstar, Kevin Durant. Durant made history last season, becoming the youngest player in the league history to win the NBA scoring title, at the tender age of 21. To put that into perspective, Michael Jordan didn't win his first scoring title until the age of 24! Even though he just turned 22, many believe Durant has the potential to become one of the greatest scorers in the history of the NBA.

Durant has accomplished an extraordinary amount by the age of 22, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Earlier in the summer Durant agreed to a contact extension with his current team, The Oklahmoa City Thunder, for a reported $86 million. To put that number into context, the largest Lotto 6/49 winning ever is 54.6 million dollars.

Needless to say, the future looks very bright and green for Kevin Durant.

Sept 27 - The Tonight Show First Aired

On this day, 56 years ago, the first ever broadcast of "The Tonight Show" was aired on NBC. The show was orginally hosted by Steve Allen from 1954-1957. The show's popularity increased dramatically when legendary host, Jimmy Carson, got behind the desk. Carson was the longest serving host to date, as he hosted the Tonight Show for 30 seasons.

The Tonight show has done over 10,500 episodes and has featured guests from all walks of life including athletes, celebrities, and politicians. In 2009, the Tonight Show became the first late night talk show in history to have the current President of the United States as a guest, when Barack Obama agreed to come on the show.

The current host, Jay Leno, reclaimed his job in controversial fashion from Conan O'Brien after a year long hiatus. The move was met with intense criticism and scrutiny from the public.

Sept 26 - Beatles Release Abbey Road

On this day, 41 years ago, The Bealtes released Abbey Road. Abbey Road would end up being the final album recorded by the super group, as The Beatles disbanded in 1970. The album was a huge success featuring classic tracks "Here Comes the Sun", "Come Together", and "Something". Abbey Road debuted at number 1 in the UK, and held the top spot on the charts for 17 of the first 18 weeks it was released. The reception was very similar across the pond in the United States, as the album spent 11 non consecutive weeks at number 1.

Abbey Road is widely considered by many to be one of the best albums of all time. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it as the #14 album in music history, while other publications have it in their top 10.

Sept 25 - The Fresh Prince Turns 42!

Happy Birthday Will Smith! Yes, on this day 42 years ago, Bel-Air's Fresh Prince was born and would go on to become one of the world's most successful musicians, actors, and producers. Smith's big breakthrough came when he starred on NBC's hit TV show, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", which became one of the most successful comedies during the 1990's. After the show's finale in 1996, Smith recorded his multi-platinum album, Big Willie Style, which featured smash hits "Gettin Jiggy With it" and "Miami".

As an actor, Smith is known for his ability to play starring roles in a wide variety of genres, including comedy, action, and drama. His portrayal of boxing legend Muhammad Ali in the blockbuster hit "Ali", earned him Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. Smith has also starred in action classics "Men In Black" and "Bad Boys".

Smith's greatest honor may have come from President Barack Obama, who stated that if a movie were to ever be made about him, that he would have Smith play the lead role.

Sept 24 - Nirvana Nevermind Album Turns 19 Years Old!

"With the lights out, it's less dangerous. Here we are now, entertain us". And with that, Nirvana's Nevermind took off and became one of the most influential albums in music history.

Nevermind is credited for helping bring alternative rock to the large mainstream audience. The album boasted several big hits including "Smells Like Teen Spirt", "Come As You Are", and "Lithium", and sold over ten million copies worldwide. Within months of its release, the album overthrew Michael Jackson's Dangerous for top spot on the Billboard charts, as the lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", became a worldwide number 1 hit.

Nevermind ranked #17 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

Sept 23 - First and Only Female NHL Goalie

On this day 18 years ago, goaltender Manon Rheaume became the first female to play in an NHL exhibition game when she suited up for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rheaume stopped 7 of 9 shots she faced and gained immense popularity after this performance as she was approached by Playboy and Penthouse magazines to pose for the publications. Rheaume now works for a foundation which helps provide scholarships for young women across Canada.

Rheaume, to this date, is still the only female to play an exhibition game in the NHL

Sept 22 - National Geographic Begins

On this day, 122 years ago, National Geographic published its first issue. National Geographic is one of the most popular magazines on the planet as it is published in 32 different languages and is received by over 50 million people each month.

The magazine is well known for its photography, which captures images from all across the world, including highly remote and scenic areas which are not often seen by the public. In 2008, National Geographic won three National Magazine Awards which included awards for photojournalism, written content, and general excellence.

The magazine has always been identifiable by it's distinct yellow border that surrounds the front page of all its issues.

Sept. 21 - J.R.R. Tolkien publishes "The Hobbit"

Happy 73rd anniversary to "The Hobbit"! The hugely successful children's novel has passed the test of time and is regarded as of the best all time classics in it's genre. The novel has evolved over the last decade, as its sequel, "The Lord of the Rings" became one of the greatest successes in both literature and film history. 

Now in 2010, "The Hobbit" is seen not only as a classic novel, but also as a collector's item. The first printing of the first English language edition has gone for over $20,000.00 in some auctions, while recent figures have estimated that worldwide sales of the novel are in the neighborhood of 100 million copies sold since 1937. 

Needless to say, "The Hobbit" is one of the all-time classics in literature history and one of J.R.R. Tolkien's finest works. 

Sept 20 - INXS Finds Their New Man

On September 20, 2005, music history was made. After 2 and a half months of watching some of musics top talents vie for a chance to be their new front man, 80's dance rock group INXS handpicked Canadian born J.D. Fortune to be their new lead singer. Fortune won the reality TV show, "Rockstar: INXS", which pitted him against 14 other hopefuls to be the heir apparent to Michael Hutchence, INXS' former front man.

Fortune performed songs by Elvis Presley, Joe Cocker, and Nirvana throughout the TV show, with his most memorable performance being his week 1 remake of The Mama and Papa's smash hit, 'California Dreamin'.

Fortune only made one album with the group, which received mixed reviews. After being kicked out of the group in early 2009, Fortune rejoined the group in 2010.

Sept. 17 - Happy Birthday Alexander Ovechkin!

For all that he's already accomplished in his NHL career, it is hard to imagine that today is only the 25th birthday for The Great Alexander Ovechkin. With 2 league MVP trophies, 2 goal scoring titles, 5 First Team All Star Selections, and 9 NHL records, there is almost nothing that "Ovie" hasn't yet accomplished.

Away from the ice, Ovechkin is becoming very prominent both in North America and Worldwide. In 2009, Ovie was ranked number 48 on G.Q. Magazine's list of "The Most Powerful Men in D.C." and in 2010 he was named as one of the official ambassadors of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Sept 16 - The Bob Newhart Show

On this day 38 years ago, the world got to witness the series premiere of one of the greatest TV shows to hit the airwaves in the 1970's, The Bob Newhart Show. The show was based around Newhart, who played a psychologist that had to deal with an array of problems that arose from his patients. The show was nominated for Best Comedy at the 1977 Emmy Awards and was among TV Guide's "Top 50 TV Shows of All time" in 2007.

Here's to Bob Newhart for making the world laugh for the better part of a decade.

September 14, 1814 - The Star Spangled Banner

On this day nearly 200 years ago, the lyrics to arguably the most recognizable anthem on the planet, The Star Spangled Banner, were written. The lyrics to the anthem were written by Francis Scott Key after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812.

The anthem is sung before every professional North American sports game as well as orchestral concerts within the United States. The most famous renditoin of the anthem was done by Whitney Houston, who's remake of the National Anthem became a top 20 hit in the United States, making her the only musician to turn the national anthem into a pop hit.

Canucks Tickets Go On Sale Today

Hockey fans rejoice, the NHL season is just around the corner.

Canucks regular season tickets for the 2010-11 season go on sale today at 10:00am. Typically the tickets sell out fast, and this year should be no exception. The season ticket base stayed capped at 17,000 with a 97% renewal campaign.

Fans can purchase tickets on-line at, or by calling Ticketmaster at (604) 280-4400. Tickets will be available at Ticketmaster Ticket Centres and the Rogers Arena Box Office starting Monday, September 13th.

September 9 - NFL Season Kicks Off!

For those of you die hard NFL fans, this is the moment you have been waiting for!

The 2010/2011 NFL season kicks off today at (8:30 pm ET), when the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints host the MInnesota Vikings in a rematch of last year's NFC Championship game. You can check out the broadcast on any of the following SIRIUS radio channels

September 7 - Happy Birthday Buddy!

On September 7th, 1936, one of music's great all time talents was born. Buddy Holly, known worldwide for his hit singles "Peggy Sue" and "That'll be the day", was hailed by music critic Bruce Elder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll." Holly was among the first inductees into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Unfortunately, Holly is most well known for his shocking death at the age of 22 when a plane carrying Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper crashed en route to Minnesota. Holly's death sent shock waves throughout the music world and was dubbed as "The Day the Music Died".

Roughriders Loonie Available Today

The Saskatchewan Roughrider fans now have one more way to celebrate their beloved team. The Rider's Loonie is now available for trade at various locations across Saskatchewan. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 2007 Grey Cup Champions, the mint says about 3 million will be put into circulation this year.

This left us wondering... how many will be accidentally spent at the bar during the weekend long celebrations?

September 2 - Happy Birthday Tony Alva!

Who is Tony Alva you ask? "T.A." is one of the original Z-Boys and is considered to be one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. Alva was the first ever World Champion of Skateboarding after earning the title in 1977, and along with the rest of the "Z-Boys", used to skateboard in empty backyard swimming pools to hone his skills.

Alva was portrayed by Victor Rasuk in the box office hit "Lords of Dogtown" in 2005.

September 1, 2010 - The Marathon of Hope

On this day 30 years ago, Canadians all across the country were somber as Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope came to an end in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Up to that point, Fox had ran for 143 days and 5,373 kilometres heading West across Canada.

After raising 1.7 million dollars throughout the duration of the Marathon of Hope, donations continued well after Fox had stopped running. By the following April, over 23 million dollars had been raised. The Ottawa Citizen described the national response to his marathon as "one of the most powerful outpourings of emotion and generosity in Canada's history".

Today, the entire country takes part in the Terry Fox Run which is often held on the second Sunday of September. This year the run will be held on September 19th.
