September 1, 2010 - The Marathon of Hope

On this day 30 years ago, Canadians all across the country were somber as Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope came to an end in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Up to that point, Fox had ran for 143 days and 5,373 kilometres heading West across Canada.

After raising 1.7 million dollars throughout the duration of the Marathon of Hope, donations continued well after Fox had stopped running. By the following April, over 23 million dollars had been raised. The Ottawa Citizen described the national response to his marathon as "one of the most powerful outpourings of emotion and generosity in Canada's history".

Today, the entire country takes part in the Terry Fox Run which is often held on the second Sunday of September. This year the run will be held on September 19th.
